The weekend of April 27th, Jacksonville Florida opened up their city and welcomed in thousands of rockers to join together in their love for music. The line of festival goers was already snaking around in front of the admission gates by 10am with everyone anxious for gates to open at noon. Crowds wearing their finest rock attire then filled up the expanded venue which this year encompassed Metropolitan Park and spilled over into the parking lots of Everbank Field. Horns began being raised in the air by music fans as soon as the booming tunes started belting out on Friday to begin the 3 day weekend WELCOME TO ROCKVILLE music festival kicking off rock music’s loudest month.
Bands from the up and coming JOYOUS WOLF and THEM EVILS out of California to the heavy hitters of THE FOO FIGHTERS and FIVE FINGER DEATH PUNCH all the way to old school tunes from BILLY IDOL AND OZZY OSBOURNE had everyone, young and old alike, jumping, screaming, singing, and crowd surfing to the heart’s delight. Parent’s with their small children perched atop their shoulders so they could get a better view, grandparents being taught how to ‘throw up their horns’ by their teenage grandchildren, and all out metal rockers dressed in their solid black clothing accented by chains and harnesses stood shoulder to shoulder without issue. Music was the main agenda for this weekend across all the spectrums of people.
Rockers were able to take breaks from the mosh pits and crowd surfers to enjoy some shopping to get their collector’s edition Welcome to Rockville 2018 Zippo Lighters and check out the cigar booths if one so chose. Many rockers were seen at the well known FXCK CANCER organization booth and were helping fund cancer research and programs by purchasing t-shirts and bracelets. Others were seen viewing original artwork that was for sale by local artists and finding vintage concert t-shirts and clothing that reminded them of bands and years past. To complete the shopping experience at this year’s festival, everyone knows its mandatory to stop by the WTR MERCH TENT to pick up their yearly purchase of a Welcome to Rockville t-shirt or hoodie complete with the grim reaper and his sickle, coffins, and skulls.
The smell of spices, grease, beer and whiskey wafted thru the air as you passed by the food trucks and booths offering delicious choices such as crawfish etouffee and deep fried alligator tails to crispy bacon blanketed with gooey hot pepper cheese grilled cheese sandwiches and so much more. To comfort your sweet tooth to finish off your meal, there wasn’t a lack of choices either. Root beer floats, cotton candy, ice cream, and funnel cakes were easily found. Thirst quenching was easy to be done at the wine garden and tiki bar, both complete with ambient lighting. Glasses of wine, Colonel Beach’s Plantation Punch, go-to rum runners and craft beer always hit the spot. For the designated drivers, a booth with gourmet and regular coffees and teas was available.
Please check out my interviews with Greta Van Fleet, Tyler Bryant & The Shakedown, Pop Evil, Joyous Wolf, Them Evils, Sevendust, and Palisades as they took time out of their schedules to sit down with me and talk a bit about their upcoming tours, albums, and their music. Then check out the picture gallery that will have you wishing that you would have been there rocking out with The Fuze Magazine. As always, go like your favorite band’s media and social pages, always support them at your local shows by buying tickets and their merchandise and continue to ROCK ON!
