Utica on Tap is a beer lover’s paradise
If you love beer, especially craft beer, then the Utica on Tap Festival is for you. Here’s the kicker. Even if you think that you don’t like beer, it may still be for you. Craft beer isn’t all dark and bitter. Some of it is fruity, malty, nutty or even sweet and sometimes featuring chocolate, vanilla, oatmeal or even coffee flavors. If your only beer experience is from a can of yellow, fizzy mass produced light beer, give craft beer a try. Not only will there be a huge variety of craft brews to sample, but this event will also feature several food vendors and live entertainment. Utica on Tap is from 5 to 8 p.m., Saturday, March 7 at The Aud, 400 Oriskany St. W., Utica.
Utica on Tap will include over 100 beers and ciders from some of America’s finest craft breweries. Some of these include Shock Top, Magic Hat, Blue Moon, Twisted Tea and probably the most well-known, Sam Adams. You may have heard of these and even tried some or all of them. What you may not know is that these breweries offer a wide variety of beers that aren’t always available at your local market. You might discover that your favorite craft brewery has more to offer than you could have imagined.
New York State will be heavily represented at this great event. You will have a chance to sample many types of ale, stouts, porters, lagers, ciders and much more from all over the Empire State. A few of these fine establishments include the Brooklyn Brewery which is run by a group of beer lovers from all over the world and features a wide variety of IPA’s, Lagers, Saison, Pilsner and seasonal brews, including the delicious Black Chocolate Stout. Southern Tier, located in Lakewood, NY is one of the best known breweries in craft beer circles. They feature a huge variety including a 2XIPA and Pumking, one of the tastiest pumpkin ales to come out in years. Brewery Ommegang, from Cooperstown will be represented as well. They are known as a Belgian/American love child and feature award winning Belgian style ales like the full bodied Three Philosophers and Abbey Ale. One of Upstate New York’s most popular breweries, Saranac which offers up such gems as Black Forest and Legacy IPA, will be there celebrating over 125 years of brewing excellence. Also represented will be Empire Brewing, Ithaca Beer Company, Lake Placid Craft, and Sackets Harbor Brewing Company. The latter being the producer of the world famous, silver medal winning amber, War of 1812 Ale.
Alongside of all of the well-known and local craft brews will be several “hidden gems” from around the country that may provide you a new found love affair with beer. There are entirely too many of these to list, but here is a small sampling of what’s in store for your tasting pleasure. Founders Brewing from Michigan have many tasty beers and produce a wonderful breakfast Stout that gives you a reason to drink in the morning. Smutty nose from New Hampshire brews a tremendous and diverse selection of beers including pilsners, IPA’s, holiday beers and even Barley Wine style ale. Victory Brewing from Pennsylvania will also be represented with some of the tastiest high ABV (Alcohol by Volume) beers in the industry, including the famous Golden Monkey.
Live music will include the Amy Lyn Duo along with Kelly Preston and Max Scialdone. There also will be an unique twist to the event – a Silent Disco. Patrons will receive a pair of headphones that will be playing music. It should make the night interesting … watching people dance to the music on the headphones while the observer has no idea what they are listening too.
The cost is $35 in advance and you must have your paper ticket in hand or digital ticket on your smart phone. Tickets will be $45 at the door. With your admission, you receive a free tasting glass to sample the brews from 5 to 8 p.m. as well as free entertainment from some of the best local talent around. Obviously, you must be at least 21 to enter. Tickets are available at http://uticaontap.com. Come on out and find your new “go to beer” and discover why craft beer is taking the country by storm. Good people drink good beer. Cheers!
