Sweeney Todd comes alive in Baldwinsville

Well, check out the Baldwinsville Theater Guild’s dark and gritty musical “Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street” at 8 p.m., Jan. 22-23, 29-30 and Feb. 5-6 with a matinee at 3 p.m., Jan. 31 at the Baldwinsville Presbyterian Church, 64 Oswego St., Baldwinsville. The musical will feature Benjamin E. Sills and Cathleen O’Brien Brown as Sweeney Todd and Mrs. Lovett respectively. With music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim and book by Hugh Wheeler, and based on an adaptation by Christopher Bond, Sweeney Todd has both delighted and awed audiences around the world. Sweeney Todd tells the story of a barber who has returned to London after 15 years in a penal colony. Working with his landlady, Mrs. Lovett, Sweeney plots his revenge upon the Judge who falsely convicted him and destroyed his family. The gritty and dark musical meshes a masterful plot of thrills and unexpected turns together with a beautiful yet haunting score to create a musical experience unlike any other. Sweeney Todd won the Tony award in 1979 for Best Musical.
