Not your average pizza shop

Jonny’s Pizza is nestled in Downtown Utica that not only serves delicious pizza but some of Utica’s well known dishes like chicken riggies and Italian greens. The “pizza shop” has a fresh, hip vibe with their “lounge area” in the front with oversized furniture. A great place to sit back and relax while enjoying a bite to eat, waiting for your pizza or just catching up with friends. And, I am a sucker for brick and tin ceilings and Jonny’s had both – exposed brick walls and a cool, urban tin ceiling. It gives the place a really cool touch. Jonny’s is a great place to grab take out if you are on the run, on your lunch break or if just don’t want to cook. They also have a dining room for you and your family or friends to relax and let them do the cooking for you. Jonny’s is not your average pizza shop – they are so much more. They are located at 100 Genesee St. in Utica. Now, let’s get to the food!

Appetizers:

Mozzarella sticks (A must try every time): A hearty amount of mozzarella with a bread coating that is fried to perfection – crispy on the outside with cheese over flowing out of its seems. They are served with their homemade marinara sauce which is a smooth blend of tomatoes and spices.

Mac & Cheese Bites: What can say about these little bundles of pure goodness but yummm-O! A cheesy blend of macaroni and cheese that is deep fried. A crunch on the outside with a creamy inside. A perfect addition to game day!

Meals:

Chicken Riggies: As soon as they brought it to the table (well just thinking about it) my mouth started to water. I’m not sure what the sauce is technically called but I call it a “pink sauce” – a blend of a cream sauce mixed with their homemade tomato sauce. To me that is a match in heaven – gives it the right balance. The pasta is generously coated in sauce loaded with chunks of chicken that is lightly coated and nice and juicy, fresh veggies like onions and arrangement of peppers. You are able to pick your level of heat – I’m a wuss and went with mild that stills packs some heat. It also comes with a refreshing salad and garlic bread which was loaded with parmesean cheese and garlic.

Small Pizza: Pizza as so many components and they nailed all of them. The dough was on point. Thick crust that was chewy on the outside with a little crispness on the bottom. The pizza was loaded with a blend of cheeses that just came out on all directions and well you can never have too much cheese, thin, round slices of homemade meatballs and pepperoni. Pizza is great with just cheese but when toppings are added especially when they are homemade it takes it to a whole new level. The sauce was the glue of the pizza that brought everything together.

Dessert:

Warning – you will leave with a sugar high

Deep Fried Oreos and Twinkies: Two of our favorite childhood treats that was taken to the fry gods. They were lightly coated and deep fried to perfection. Where were they 20 years ago? Well, I’m glad they weren’t around – I don’t think I would have been able to stop after one.

Next time you don’t feel like cooking – let Jonny’s do the cooking for you. But we warn you – you will leave in a food coma!
