Great NYS Fair Guide 2016
The Great NYS Fair is like your favorite county fair pumped up on steroids, served with a side of Popeye’s spinach, ready to knock you out with amazing performances, agricultural shows and vendors. For many farmers in our great state, this is the BIG show, the winner-takes-all bragging right for the rest of the year, and with the fair starting next Thursday, Aug. 27 and lasting more than a week, there is more than enough to keep you and the family occupied. The Fairgrounds is located at 581 State Fair Blvd., Syracuse. Tickets are $6 if buy them in advance through Wednesday, Aug. 24 but will go up to $10 at the gate. This year, the NYS Fair has made it so easy to find and feast on your favorite fair fare. The interactive food map is launched, and you can find it right here! Do you need to find food on the cheap? You can filter your results to “food around $1” and see what great options you have. Whether its food on a stick, your favorite deep fried whatever, or perhaps that donut with all of the fruity pebbles on it, you will find it with ease! Thanks for making us fat kids happy!
Taste NY is the state’s effort to link consumers to the best products made and grown right here in New York State. Visit Taste NY now inside the Horticulture Building for free samples of food and beverage products while you meet the people behind those products. If you like something, you can buy it right then and there. And if you come to the Fair more than once, visit Taste NY again because the vendors change daily. You’ll be sure to find something new for your kitchen!
While still in the Horticulture Building the New York State Fair Potato Booth has a new location in the “Spuds and Suds” restaurant. There will still be the $1 white and sweet potatoes with all the toppings to eat and now you can also get a $1 drink from Saranac who has partnered with the State Fair to provide a great deal for every fairgoer.
Baseball and Football Skill Competitions
In the new grassy picnic area along Broadway, an eight-day baseball and football skills competition will take place. The Football Skills Challenge, Aug. 29 – Sept. 1, will feature young people testing their football passing and kicking skills, while the Home Run Derby and Skills Challenge, September 2 – 5, will feature young home run hitters, pitchers and fielders. Bubble Blast Run
You will never have more fun at a running event than at the Bubble Blast Run, which takes place at 10 a.m., Sunday, Aug. 28 starting at Chevy Court. It might be difficult to resist the temptation to run through the fun and foamy obstacles along the way! The Sudsy Slip & Slide and the Human Car Wash are just two of the bubble-filled obstacles that make this a run unlike any other. It’s fun for the whole family, but it has a serious goal, too. The run raises money for ACR Health’s Youth Services Division.
Register before the event for and save $5 per person off the price on the day of the event. Your registration includes admission to the Fair and a Bubble Blast Run T-shirt. Full-price admission tickets will also be available the day of the event. Butter & Cheese Sculptures
Visit the Dairy Products Building to see hundreds of pounds of butter turned into art to mark the 45th anniversary of this State Fair tradition. For the visually impaired we also have a hands-on clay model of the butter sculpture at the Dairy Princess Booth. You can also see blocks of New York State cheese carved into artwork before your eyes. Make sure to check out our Dairy Day schedule for Monday, August 29.
Cats Gone Wild! Ensuring the Future of Wildcats
This exhibit is put on by Hawk Creek Wildlife Center, a feline conservation facility in New York State. Fairgoers will be able to learn about these endangered cats and see them up close. Featuring the Eurasian Lynx, Geoffroy Cat, Serval and Cougar, guests will learn from the experts, ask questions and get an up-close view at this amazing exhibit that has been seen on the National Geographic, The Today Show, Rachael Ray and Conan O’Brien. Three shows daily at Noon, 2:30 and 4:30 p.m., located between the International and Horticulture Buildings.
City Market at The Fair
Browse four dozen booths set up along the back of Chevy Court in front of the State Park on Sunday, Aug. 28 to find handmade arts, crafts, and antiques, as well as handmade jewelry from around the world. This event is one day only and open from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m.
Eudora Farms Petting Zoo
Just imagine seeing animals from all four corners of the world – from buffalo to zebras, it can all be found at the Fairgrounds. An interactive, hands on experience with some of Mother Nature’s greatest creatures, the Eudora Farms Petting Zoo is a unique and thrilling encounter for children and adults of all ages. Come see, pet and learn about animals from several different continents including Africa, South America, Australia and Asia. You’ll interact with kangaroos, yaks, llamas, monkeys, wild cats and watusi and even get a camel ride if you want one. Open 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily with educational shows at 2:45 & 4:15 p.m. in the Family Fun Center near the Youth Building.
Look for the new Kiddleland Midway location now behind the International Building! An area for the younger crowd, set apart from the main midway in which families can relax and let their little ones try age-appropriate rides without the noise and excitement of the busier, older crowds. Make no mistake this area is still filled with exciting rides, games and attractions!
You know them as graceful sea creatures – now get up close with these beauties. This interactive exhibit lets you safely touch and view stingrays, while learning more about these wonderful creatures and their sea life from knowledgeable educators and videos. Free of charge, it’s the world’s only traveling, self-contained Stingray Exhibit! Open daily from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. in front of the Toyota Coliseum.
The Harlem Wizards
The Harlem Wizards are back! Check out some amazing basketball talent combined with hilarious comedy. The athleticism, tricks, fancy teamwork and ball-handling wizardry, plus wild dunks not even seen in NBA games, engages and wows the most avid hoops fans. Midway Rides by Wade Shows, Inc.
The Wade Shows Midway at the 2016 Great New York State Fair will be the largest in Fair history as a result of the $50 million project to revitalize the Fairgrounds. The improved 15 acre Midway will offer at least 70 rides, many of them new to the Fair, and feature wider and safer aisles as well as more covered seating areas. Wade Shows is North America’s premier carnival company and their unique spectacular rides and attractions, unparalleled customer amenities and service-oriented staff are the reasons they set the standard in the industry. PAW Patrol Roll Patrol Road Tour
Nickelodeon’s popular kid’s adventure series, “PAW Patrol,” is coming to the 2016 Great New York State Fair to allow the show’s young fans to experience the thrill of a rescue mission. The PAW Patrol Roll Patrol Road Tour will visit the Fair from Friday, Sept. 2 to Sunday, Sept. 4 in the Family Fun Center near the Youth Building. There is no charge to take part in the tour.
The fully interactive tour, inspired by PAW Patrol, features an 18-wheel semi-truck PAW Patroller that opens to reveal a life-sized PAW Patrol Headquarters, which kids can walk through. Within the PAW Patroller experience, there are interactive games, a life-sized Lookout Tower (with working periscopes) and a slide to take kids on to the next mission. The tour includes activations featuring two new segments launching this fall – Jungle Rescue and Roll Patrol. PAW Patrol fans can take photos in the Jungle area featuring the new pup tracker, then ride on life-size Roll Patrol racers around a track, and finish their day by taking a photo with PAW Patrol pups – Chase, Marshall, Skye and Rubble.
XPOGO Stunt Team
The Xpogo Stunt Team is the world’s best extreme pogo demo crew, Featuring Championship Pro Athletes flying over 10 Feet in the air on extreme pogo sticks throwing down flips and incredible tricks, the Xpogo Stunt Team brings the sport to you. With fans across the globe, and new followers after every show, Xpogo Stunt Team Pros are a hit everywhere, every time. The Xpogo Stunt team has headlined in 21 countries, appeared in numerous TV shows, Music Videos, commercials, and films, and collectively holds 13 current Guinness World Records. Three shows daily at 11 a.m., 1 and 4 p.m. in the Family Fun Center area in front of the Youth Building.
Taste NY Food Truck Competition
Food trucks are all the rage, and the Great New York State Fair is searching for the very best of them. The Food Truck Competition on Sunday, Sept. 4, will bring 20 food trucks from all over the state to the streets around Chevy Court. They will prepare their most delicious and most creative entrée for the judges, who will crown a champion. The trucks will also make $2 samples of the entrees available to public and the public will also vote for their favorite. New this year! Want to try all the Food Trucks? If you do, keep the voting ballots from all the trucks and take them to the State Fair Food Truck and five lucky winners will win lifetime passes to the Fair!
