Crazy Otto’s makes you feel at home
Scott J. and Kim Tranter, owners of Crazy Otto’s Empire Diner have kept the classic feel alive with the décor, fast friendly service and just making you feel that you were more than a customer, but a friend. As soon as you walk through the door you’ll feel at home, like you are walking into someone’s kitchen where you aren’t just a guest in their diner, but in their home. Smiling faces greeted us, guests were mingling, music was playing in the background that you wanted to get up and dance too and the place just made you feel happy.
The walls are filled with the rich history of Herkimer. One thing you will notice when walking into the diner is the license plates. They surround the interior of the diner with places from all over the country. Some were given to Scott by customers; who in turn get a free dinner.
Now, let’s get to the food which is what you guys want to hear about, right? Crazy Otto’s is known for their burgers; they hold the 2012 and 2013 Best Burger title for Region 4 of New York State. And, they lived up to the title. The burgers were juicy and seasoned to perfection; it will tantalize your taste buds. The burgers are served with homemade potato chips. Now, please don’t let the name scare you off by the next dish that was sampled: a match made in heaven- Chicken and Waffles. A Belgium waffle topped with 3 fried chicken tenders strips, syrup and butter. The waffle was light and fluffy with a hint of buttery goodness and the combination of the waffle, chicken and syrup was perfection. Milkshakes topped off our dinners. Now, you are probably asking how we had room for milkshakes, but how can you go to dinner and not have one? You can’t. And, one word … delicious. Make sure you bring your appetite you are going to need it!
After dinner stop by and check out the merch counter … cookbooks, mugs, T-Shirts are available for purchase. And, there is a guestbook to sign to let them how your travels brought you to this hidden gem. We spoke with Kyle Soule, 9 of Westminister, MA who was traveling on vacation with his family and stopped for dinner after sightseeing. When asking him what made him want to stop here for dinner his face lit up and said, “the name, I love it.” Soule gave the brownie sundae two thumbs up with a huge smile. His final words, “I will be back.”
