We recently were able to ask Mark Bolos Jr about the ins and outs of Big Apple Music.

PIC3BIGFuze: How did you get into the music world?
Big Apple: My father, Mark who can play just about any instrument, started working at Hiltons Music when he was 15 years old and a few years later ended up opening up his own music store on Oriskany Blvd. And 35 plus years later we are still going strong as a locally owned family oriented Music store.

Fuze: What is your biggest seller?
Big Apple: Guitars are no doubt our biggest seller.

Fuze: How have things changed since you first opened?
Big Apple: The Internet has changed the face of selling forever. But we are fortunate to have the best and most loyal customers who continue to support us in our goal of supporting local music!

Fuze: Has there ever been in a different location?
Big Apple: As mentioned earlier we started on Oriskany Blvd then moved to New Hartford at our current location. We also had a small location in Syracuse that has since turned into a large scale Rental business that caters to all sorts or large venues and concerts including the NY State Fair.

PIC4BIGFuze: Do you ever see yourself expanding?
Big Apple: We are always looking for ways to keep our current store fresh. We recently added all new display cases and a lounge area for our students and parents.

Fuze: Do you sell any locally made instruments?
Big Apple: There are some great locally made instruments. We’ve had everything from guitars to effects pedals and even Djembe and Cajon drums.

Fuze: Do you or anyone play an instrument? Play in a band?
Big Apple: I recently took time off from the band I played with after having my two beautiful kids. My father along with everyone who works for us are all currently gigging musicians.

Fuze: Name your favorite instrument?
Big Apple: I love to sell all types of instruments. Everyone that comes into the store has their own personal taste and we love to help them find the perfect instrument that they will love to make music with!

Fuze: Has there ever been any traveling musicians stop through? If so, who?
Big Apple: There have been plenty of nationally recognized artists who have been in the store. Andrea Bocelli and Aerosmith are two of the biggest that come to mind. Aerosmith even mentioned us in the “Thanks Too” page on one of their early albums.

PIC5BIG_nFuze: What do you feel is the next big bubble in music instruments/technology that is ready to explode?
Big Apple: The home and phone/tablet recording age is the hottest trend now. It’s now easier than ever to record right on your own computer or phone and post it online for the world to see. We stock all the latest and greatest accessories that you need to be the next interest sensation.

Fuze: Where do you see Big Apple in the next 5-10 years?
Big Apple: We will be right here in the same place helping fulfill the music needs all of the fantastic musicians in the area. Whether they are just starting or they are playing Madison Square Garden, we will be here to make sure they get the best gear, best pricing and the very best service in the music industry.
