Benny Mardones brought X-Mas to TS Casino
Another epic night of music came to the Showroom at the Turning Stone Resort & Casino. None other than the legendary Rock & Roll Benny Mardones performed to a nearly sold out crowd. As the room filled with fans from a variety of all ages the stage had a drop down screen that showed all the things Benny himself was a part of over the years such as concerts, TV interviews and anything else he may have been caught on camera that involved his career. Benny has been an icon in the music industry for decades. Although a music artist, Benny has a way with his words that gets you laughing with his standup comedy as well. He said to all the ladies in the crowd “I would like a few of you under my Christmas tree, but where I’m from that would have to be in the sand.” California doesn’t see much snow unless it’s in the mountains and that’s why he comes back home to Syracuse for the holidays.
Benny had a few stories to tell the crowd, but he performed song after song without a glitch. Mr. Mardones has been dealing with Parkinson’s disease for the last 15 years and said “Now I know somebody out there is writing a book on my life and is waiting for me to die, they’ll keep waiting to finish it – I’m not done yet.” Mardones had a few family members in the crowd along with a gentlemen named Gary & his wife from Virginia whom he has been friends with for over 50 years. Gary was also Benny’s “bodyguard” back in his school days when Benny would get bullied by other students. Several different times fans would yell out “We love you” Benny, he would respond – I love you too & there’s nothing like Christmas in Syracuse. Long- time friend and member of his band Kim Fetters gave Benny a short break and sang “Faithfully” by Journey. Kim did a great job on that song and she also covered backup vocals during Benny’s set. Mardones brought out several small wet hand towels during the show. He would wipe his face with them or would ring out the water and let the droplets drip down onto himself. Benny would periodically throw some of these towels out to the crowd which had his signature on them as souvenirs. Mardones closed out the night by telling the crowd it’s been a rough year, but he’s grateful to be here and that he will be back in the summer for another show. A long line of fans met with Mardones after the show to meet the icon and get his autograph.
