Ashley Lynn Winery: A delicious treat

Ashley Lynne Winery - The Fuze Magazine (8)If you’re looking for a place with a huge variety of great local wines, a friendly, knowledgeable staff, tasty cheese, homemade sauces, fresh produce, dips and snacks, as well as a greenhouse packed with gorgeous flowers, well then I have just the place for you! Ashley Lynn Winery on Route 104 in New Haven, NY. This little place has that comfortable, down home, country feel that is so inviting, it’s nearly impossible to pass it by when you’re in the area. Not to mention that Ashley Lynn is famous for their incredibly delicious wine slushies!

The exterior of this building gives the appearance of a small family owned greenhouse, which it is, but there is so much more once you go inside. You will walk into a rustic, wide open area that is filled from stem to stern with all sorts of fun things. A set of shelves is packed with goodies from old fashioned local homemade relish, sauces and dips. The building has no shortage of rustic charm, with its barn style construction and farm decor. There is a greenhouse full of flowers off to one side, as well as a workshop in the rear where the owners can often be found hard at work on any number of projects. There are little crafts available for purchase around the store and on the counter a giant hunk of river rat cheese is available for your tasting pleasure.

Ashley Lynn Winery is owned by Leroy, Craig and Leon, a set of brothers from the Hurlbut family. The Hurlbuts have been growing apples and other fruits at their local orchards since 1929, hence their slogan, “Doing It The Hard Way, Since 1929″, which can be found on t-shirts available for purchase inside the shop. It is a locally owned and operated business with two locations: One in New Haven, NY and the other in Waterloo, NY, where they make their delicious wines, plus a kiosk at Destiny USA, in Syracuse, NY.

Now, Ashley Lynn is mostly known for their fruit wines. A variety of sweet to semi-sweet wines such as strawberry wine, raspberry wine and of course apple wine. These are all unique and very tasty with great aromas and vibrant colors, including my favorite, the apple cherry wine. That particular wine is a treat for the taste buds, starting on the tip of the tongue tasting like apple, then the flavors combine in the middle and it finishes with a tart cherry taste. Now, what many people may not know is that they also offer a variety of grape wines from sweet to dry. I am a lover of dry red wines and not much of a white wine fan, but Ashley Lynn surprised me with a delicious Chardonnay and a tasty Riesling among their whites. There was also a variety of red wines including a table red, a Merlot as well as a few others, but my favorite was a dry, peppery Cabernet Sauvignon. I walked away with a bottle of that particular wine, as well as five other bottles of different wines. I was truly impressed with their dry reds, they were not what I expected from a winery known for its fruit flavors. Ashley Lynn also offers Jed’s White and Jed’s Red; two wines inspired by The Beverly Hillbillies own Jed Clampet, which really brings home that down home, country feel. All of these wines and more are available for tasting at their two locations. They get their grapes from Long Island and Sterling, NY, so these are all true New York State wines.

The wine slushies are so good that I believe they warrant their own paragraph. It seems that during the hot summer months, every adult loves a wine slushie! Don’t like sweet wines? You’ll love a slushie. Don’t like dry wines? You’ll love a slushie. Don’t like wine at all? You love a slushie. They are the universal alcoholic beverage, kind of like Freeziepops for adults. If you’ve been to the New York State Fair, then you have seen people walking around with them all over the fairgrounds. Two fantastic flavors have been featured over the past several years (raspberry and strawberry) and this year they will be adding a new flavor at the fair, called Applejack. There is nothing more refreshing on a hot day than a wine slushie and Ashley Lynn makes some of the best around, so stop by one of their two locations and sample before you buy one (and you will buy at least one). Be sure to find one of their booths scattered around the New York State Fair and cool down with a refreshing slushie. You won’t regret it!
