ArtSpace Expands and Deepens Collaboration with Project-U
The visual arts component of Utica Music and Arts Festival is expanding beyond live mural painting this year under the direction of Syracuse area artist Steve Nyland to include five locations for dedicated gallery shows & reception events for the first night of the festival, Friday, Sept. 12.
ArtSpace 2014 at the Utica Auditorium: The Project-U Artists Group continues the tradition of live mural painting at UMAF this year on Saturday, Sept. 13 at the Aud during ArtSpace — Ten painters will each be assigned a 4×4 foot surface arrayed into a 40 foot long mural, given a box of paints and set loose! There will also be a smaller mural board set aside for all festival attendees to contribute to with an exhibit of all the results in the works for later in the fall or winter months at a Utica venue TBA.
Project-U at Macartovin Annex The Project-U Artists Group will be holding an open studios demonstration at the Macartovin Building, 7 Devereux St. at the corner of Genesee and Devereux, with a reception event scheduled for Friday, Sept. 12 from 5 to 9 p.m. Six artists will create a living exhibit demonstrating how their studio environment is comprised with current and in-progress examples of their artwork on display. Representatives from the group will be unhand to greet the public & talk about their work, with light refreshments and atmospheric DJ music stimulating the creative ambiance.
Open Studios at Upstate Flux: The new Upstate Flux arts incubator at 926 Columbia St. will be staging an Open Studios event with related exhibition of artworks in their ground floor gallery spaces for UMAF with a hosted reception event taking place on Friday, Sept. 12 from 5 to 9 p.m. Invited artists from the ranks of Sculpture Space Inc. alumni and artworks by other esteemed Utica area creators will also be on display, with light refreshments and discreet music acts to set the tone.
Vallory at the Utica Veteran’s Outreach Center: Artist Julie Angerosa from the Upstate Flux group will be curating an exhibit of artworks by Utica area veterans in a “Gallery of Valor” at the city’s Veterans Outreach Center, at 726 Washington St., with a reception event scheduled for Friday, Sept. 12 from 5 to 9 p.m. Food and music are also on the plan for the evening with area eateries invited to contribute hot & cold eats with the Center’s cafe facility serving as a readymade dining area. Music acts TBA and we hope for a surprise or two!
Landscaped at The Tramontane Cafe Gallery: Project-U artist Dawn H. Farrar will be presenting an exhibit of landscape works by invited artists at the Tramontane Cafe Gallery, 1105 Lincoln Ave, with a reception event scheduled for Friday, Sept. 12 from 5 to 9 p.m. Light refreshments will be served and representatives from the group of artists shown will be on hand to greet the public & talk about their work.
