Music brings people together and we couldn’t think of better way to remember, celebrate and honor the late Al Nathan. Nathan was known in the community for his musicianship and education of the arts. A musical festival – The Al Nathan Tribute Concert has been formed in his honor that will take place from 11 a.m. to 6:30 p.m., Saturday, May 20 at the Stanley Center for the Arts, 259 Genesee St., Utica. All proceeds from the concert will benefit the Al Nathan Music Scholarship that will go toward a graduating senior from Thomas R Proctor High School. The day is jam packed with music performed by our local favorites that we have come to know and love that include: Bluestreak, The Matt Lomeo Band, Lacking Larry, Simple Props, The Crazy Fools, Showtime, Last Left, The Blarney Rebel Band, Fritz’s Polka Band and The Fulton Chain Gang along with acoustic performances by Mark Bolos Sr., Plainfellow, Al Sherline, Jeremy Ukena and Brian Mulkerne. Tickets are only $20 and $30 for VIP which will snag you a cool event T-shirt and preferred seating. To purchase tickets, call 315-724-4000, visit Ticketmaster.com or stop by the Stanley box office from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. through Friday.

“Al was one of a kind and had a personality that was larger than life” said Tony Adamo, Al’s former band-mate. “I got to know Al well playing “gigs” with him over the last 6 years or so. He was highly regarded in the local music scene, almost like royalty. It was literally an honor to share the stage (or floor, or parking lot… etc.) with him each and every time. It was never rehearsed, we just played and it came together. Blues, jazz, rock n roll, it didn’t matter. It was always genuine and always fun. That, in itself, was special and something that I will sorely miss.”
