A ‘Smashing’ Good Time with Gallagher

Gallagher

1463286_10152404659757109_3142262899747511071_nOn Friday Dec. 12, comedian Gallagher, will be performing at the Radisson Hotel-Utica Centre in downtown Utica with special guest AGT’s Robert Channing, with appearances from Simple Props, Matt Episcopo, Fritz Polka Band, Sinners Ink, Dion Abraham and Willie Waffle.

This menagerie of talent is being supplied for the WIBX Keeler Christmas Bash. This event is being held to raise money and toys for the Keeler in the Morning Toy Drive which will benefit Operation Sunshine and the Time Warner Toys for Kids campaign. These two organizations are community-oriented, helping local families here in central New York to experience the joy of the holidays.

Admission to the event is one new toy for the WIBX 950AM Keeler Toy Drive. If you would like to obtain tickets to the event before the night of the show, you can call WIBX and talk to Jeff Monaski at 315-272-2815, or the Keeler in the Morning Show weekday mornings between 6 and 9 a.m. at 315-736-0186, to pledge a toy or money for which you will be offered ticket(s) to the show. All donations from the WIBX Keeler Christmas Bash and Toy Drive will go to charity.

Doors open at 7 p.m. to a night of music, magic and comedy provided by Simple Props, Sinners Ink, Dion Abraham, Willie Waffle, Matt Episcopo, Fritz Polka Band, AGT’s Robert Channing and, of course, Gallagher.

Comedian Gallagher graduated from the University of South Florida in the 70’s having majored in chemical engineering and minoring in English Literature. It is likely that his intelligence and understanding of the English language are contributing factors behind much of the biting wit, dry humor and striking puns he wove so elegantly into his many comedy routines.

Specifically remembered as one of his best, and actually his signature bit, was the Sledge-O-Matic routine. First appearing in the 70’s, this bit was a parody of Ronco’s Veg-O-Matic, a popular “As Seen on TV” product infomercial. Though this routine was, in part, simply a series of several objects (mostly vegetables and fruit- especially the watermelon,) being smashed by Gallagher with an oversized wooden mallet, it was also several minutes of wonderfully written jokes that were so successful he was able to feature this bit for a solid two decades with great response from audiences across the country. Audience members at the WIBX Keeler Christmas Bash are likely hoping to catch this performance, since Gallagher is performing his “farewell tour,” after suffering three heart attacks, the performer has decided to retire, so this may be the last time you have a chance to see one of a generation’s greatest comedians in a live setting.
