A Hidden Jewel in Utica … Lady J’s
Lady J’s is more than a restaurant it’s a family affair. Everyone that works there is family and once you enter their doors you feel like you instantly become family too. Rebecca and Arlene Hernandez (owners) and Traycee and Joetta Adams (Rebecca’s sisters) greeted us recently as we came to sample their delights for a private sit down. Everyone there makes you feel at home – just like if you were at their home.
Lady J’s features southern cooking with a twist. They have all the classics from Chicken & Waffles, Catfish, Chitterlings, Beef Oxtails to cheesy grits topped with shrimp, collard greens and so much more. One of the special treats Lady J’s has to offer is their Gospel Sunday (1st and 3rd Sunday of the month) from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Sit down and relax and catch up with friends and enjoy some home cooked food.
After carefully reading the menu an appetizer stuck out to us … Hush Puppies. Being it’s a southern restaurant how you can not try them. A little round ball of heaven – a corn bread mixture lighting deep fried that was served with the most amazing sauce ever – a Cajun dipping sauce with a kick. You have to come in and try it! And, be prepared once you have one it’s hard to stop.
Soon after our food arrived all you thought was how am I going to eat all this? Don’t worry they have boxes you can package up the yummy goodness. The portions aren’t your average size portions. I had to stay true to the Southern roots and order the Fish & Shrimp Po’Boy – Catfish deep fried perfectly topped with friend shrimp (gives it that extra pop) served on a heavenly roll (we tried to get it out of them where they bought the bread from but they wouldn’t budge. It’s that good) with lettuce and mayo. I strongly suggest you ask for a side of their Cajun dipping sauce … it goes perfectly with the fish. Make sure you have your fork ready … it’s so big that it’s hard to eat with your hands. All the fixings that came with it was delicious … homemade mac n cheese and homemade dressing with gravy. There really are no words for these Southern treats expect for yumm! Also, we sampled the Philly Cheese Steak Sandwich. Finely chopped steak seasoned to perfection served on their famous roll. Someday we will find out where they get them from.
Lady J’s also offers catering. So, if you are planning a party and you don’t want to cook let Lady J’s do it for you. For more information, call 315-507-2442.
