Rusty Doves delight crowd at MWPAI Arts Festival
Music floated in the breeze on Saturday in the MWPAI courtyard during their annual Arts Festival with a refreshing set by local Americana, et cetera duo, The Rusty Doves. A delighted crowd of onlookers spanning the decades enjoyed the shade from the trees and the lively, lovely sounds of two of their talented neighbors, Jerry D and Alyssa Stock who collectively comprise The Rusty Doves. The depth of musicianship possessed by these performers evidently expresses itself in sound and the general overall aesthetic of song choices and arrangements. The delivery is always humble and approachable which melds well with the duo’s selections of swing, gospel, vocal jazz standards, and stylized contemporary hits. A Rusty Doves set is nearly the definition of crowd pleasing and after the band’s recent hiatus, the pleasure was long overdue.
As a music lover, it’s not only a joy to hear favorite songs you rarely see live and local spanning back to the early 1900s, it’s also very special to see the shared experience of these songs bridge the gap between people of different ages. More mature fans listened with a nostalgic ear while toddlers danced and spun about in the grass to the carefree lilting of Alyssa’s mandolin and sweet, clear voice and the persistent, steady active thump of Jerry’s upright bass. All ages in between were smiling and lingering around the wooded yard for more than just the summer wind on such a hot day.
Gladly, the heat didn’t affect the performance or stifle people from the enjoyment of it. Yet again, the atmosphere in what always seems to become my favorite nook at this festival was light and easy lending itself to swaying and bouncing about to truly good time music. I hope you didn’t miss this great show.
The Rusty Doves are present on Facebook and you can see them live at many upcoming performances including the Canal Days Celebration in Little Falls on Aug. 9 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.; the Mohawk Valley EDGE’s Business After Hours event on Aug. 12 at 5 p.m. at Griffiss Air Force Base in Rome; and at Motorfest on Aug. 16 at 10:30 a.m. at the Vernon Downs Race Track in Vernon.
