Greta Van Fleet – Album Review – Black Smoke Rising

Good Old Fashion Blues Hard Rock

It seems odd to equate an 80’s, Bluesy Hard Rock style with four guys who weren’t even alive in that decade, but that’s what Greta Van Fleet brings us with the release of their debut EP, Black Smoke Rising. I can say, without hesitation, that Greta Van Fleet will appeal to almost everyone who loves the bluesy hard rock sounds of Great White, LA Guns and Faster Pussycat, among others. These four young men from Frankenmuth, Michigan have nailed that great hard rock and blues fusion of the eighties and listening to this album will make you long for the simpler, fun loving decade which introduced that dynamic style of music in the first place. Greta Van Fleet is made up of three brothers, Josh, Jake and Sam Kiszka and joined by best friend, Danny Wagner. The style, soul and musicianship heard on Black Smoke Rising would be impressive for any debut album, but to come from four guys who are barely out of high school is downright amazing!

Catchy riffs and fantastic vocals meld perfectly with the bluesy backbeat on every song of this standout debut EP. Black Smoke Rising features four great songs including their debut single and video, Highway Tune, a hard hitting, energetic rock song that will get your foot tapping and your head bobbing. Greta Van Fleet is bringing back the sexy sounds of hard rocking blues and it’s long overdue.
