Dave’s Diner Showcase

Dave's-Diner-(15)Dave Paratore owner of Dave’s Diner opened its door 26 years ago and hasn’t slowed down yet. Dave’s Diner has become a staple in the Utica/Schuyler area for their delicious food, large portions and ice cream which came six years later. At Dave’s you can get your breakfast, lunch, dinner and ice cream fix all in one place. They also serve beer and wine. The diner has…well a diner feel in the front with a more open room in the back that will accommodate larger parties. And, what diner doesn’t have a counter where you can watch them cook your mouth watering delights. Dave’s is more than just a diner; they are an ice cream shop that serves up one of the largest ice cream cones in the area! On Tuesday nights (5 p.m.) in the summer there is a Cruise-In night that features food, music, raffles, and let’s not forgets cars. And, Wednesday night switches over to Bike Night. Dave’s Diner is located at 2251 State Route 5, Utica, NY. Their hours are: 5:30 a.m. to 10 p.m., Monday through Sunday.

Now, let’s get to food which is the reason why we are here, right? A must try in every place we visit is the Mozzarella Sticks. You would think they would all taste the same but they don’t. Every place has their own style. They came out perfectly fried with the mozzarella seeping out as you take a bite. The sauce was just right – loaded with lots of flavor. Once I saw that I was able to build my own omelet I was sold. I loved the fact that they had healthier versions for you to choose from such as egg beaters which is what I picked along with mushrooms, cheddar and mozzarella cheese. The omelet was served with homemade home fries and your choice of toast. Be prepared for large portions of perfection. The omelet was fluffy with the right amount of cheese melted through and the mushrooms were sautéed. I think I was able to get half way through the omelet even though I wanted more. The home fries are the real deal: crunchy which is a good thing here on the outside and soft in the inside.

My partner in crime explored the lunch route and went with a BBQ Beef Sandwich that was piled high and slathered with BBQ sauce. The beef was so tender that is almost melted in your mouth. By time you are done, you will be licking your fingers – it’s that good. The sandwich was served with fries and they delivered on the right balance of crunch and softness. The BBQ sauce had a Smokey but sweet flavor that blended excellent in the sandwich.

And, yes we saved room for ice cream. You can’t visit Dave’s and not get ice cream. We went the simpler route and ordered a dish of chocolate ice cream and the other one was half mint chocolate chip with other half chocolate peanut butter covered in chocolate sprinkles. I know that might sound weird to you but you have to try it – it’s a combination made in heaven. We ordered the small which in our world is a true large.

If you are looking for a place that has great food and service with a smile check out Dave’s Diner.
